Fishing For Kingfish in Key West

A typical Key West Kingfish

One of our favorite fish, the Kingfish has scorching runs on light tackle. It's capable of destroying the drag on all but the best reel, and just doesn't know when to give up

The King Mackerel or Kingfish is a frequent winter visitor to the waters around Key West. They usually depart our shores as the water warms around the end of April and it is believed that the fish move up to the Texas coast at that time. They are a wonderful sportfish, readily taking various live and dead baitfish, spoons, jigs and other artificials.

A great bag of kingfish

When the kingfish are in residence a great day's light tackle fishing is on the cards

Being part of the mackerel family, their flesh is grey and quite oily but they are absolutely delicious when smoked and constitute the principal ingredient of all the best "smoked fish dips" that are found in the best Key West fish restaurants.
