The calm inshore waters around Key West are host to a huge number of sharks. When it's a bit too "lumpy" out on the ocean, shark fishing is a great substitute.

Inshore fishing around Key West can often mean tarpon fishing and for sure the tarpon fishing in Key West is a huge attraction and possibly the best in the world, but there are plenty more species to target if the "Silver King" is not in a cooperative mood. 


So that's why they call it the Silver King huh ?

The Tarpon is known as the "Silver King"...I wonder why ?. Key West has some of the best tarpon fishing in the world and there's every chance of you hooking several of them on a single trip. Incidentally, this little fella weighed around 100 lbs and fought for 50 minutes, they really are a great sport fish.

During the summer months the permit fishing around Key West harbor can be simply awesome, and there are always several different species of shark to target in and around the harbor and also around the calm waters of the Marquesas Islands, just a short ride out to the west.

Other species that regularly turn up in the harbor include cobia, snapper, small grouper and the occasional kingfish.

A cruise ship in Key West harbor provides an instant audience for a fighting tarpon

Huge cruise ships such as this one are regular visitors to Key West. Hook a tarpon in the harbor and there's an excellent chance that it will tow you around in front of the cruise ships, giving you an instant audience for your battle with the "Silver King". Jumps from the tarpon are greeted with rounds of applause from the audience on the liner, it's a lot of fun.
